According to Money Supermarket, 45 per cent of adults across Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK are concerned about funding this year's festive season, with 66 per cent convinced they won't have saved enough before Christmas to cover everything and will need to turn to credit cards, overdrafts and loans.

"Christmas is always a difficult time of year financially and the current economic climate is not making things any easier," says the comparison site's head of banking, Kevin Mountford.

"Preparation is the key during the festive season and consumers who have saved will be able to start the New Year without the burden of Christmas debt hanging over them."

Seventeen per cent of credit card holders in Northern Ireland and the wider UK say they plan to use a credit card for their 2009 Christmas purchasing.
