The reminder comes as new statistics highlight a rise in car insurance stealth charges as a result of fraudulent claims, making the quest to find the cheapest quote available more pertinent than ever.
Research by uSwitch.com shows some car insurance providers have hiked compulsory excess charges by almost a third in the last year, following a 44 per cent increase in fake claims.
The number of car insurance customers in Northern Ireland and the wider UK being hit with compulsory excess fees of between £1,000 and £3,000 has, as a result, increased almost tenfold.
Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at the comparison site, describes the practice by car insurance providers as "sneaky" exploitation of customers who have neither the time nor the inclination to scrutinise a given policy.
"Most people don't even know that they could be hit with two excess charges in the event of an accident so this is an easy way to generate revenue," he adds, pointing out that, unless people actually make a claim, most don't even know the charges apply to them.
